When You Control Your Thoughts, You Control Your Life. Here Is How.
The Word at the Table
I'm Neal Reyes, The Entrepreneurs' Pastor, and I'm glad you're at the table. This week I'm bringing you two distinct words again. One for your faith and one for your leadership. Let's get into it.
This Week's Word
The Opening: He Does Not Need Your Life If He Can Control Your Thoughts
The enemy does not need to control your life if he can control your thoughts.
Read that again. Slowly.
He does not need to take your job, wreck your marriage, destroy your health, or dismantle your finances. All he needs is access to your mind. Because if he controls what you think, he influences what you believe. And if he influences what you believe, he shapes what you say. And what you say shapes what you become.
Most believers have been taught how to get to heaven. But what happens between the time you get saved and the time you get there matters enormously. And one of the greatest areas of lack in the modern church is that believers have not been taught how to guard the battlefield of the mind.
That changes today.
Part One: God Is Redeeming Your Mind
We are continuing our series Redeemed: Taking Back What Was Lost on Champion's Walk, and this week we covered what I believe is one of the most important teachings in the entire series. God is redeeming your mind.
Our foundation scripture for today is Romans 12:2 NKJV. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
That verse is described in Scripture under the heading of living sacrifices to God. And I want you to understand something about that phrase. Living. Not past tense. Not a one and done moment. A living sacrifice is ongoing. Which means the renewing of your mind is not a one time event. It is a daily decision.
Now I want to break this down into three sections the way God has instructed me to teach it. Why it matters, how to do it, and what is at stake.
Why it matters. Proverbs 23:7 NKJV tells us, for as he thinks in his heart, so is he. Your thoughts are not just passing clouds. They are architects. What you consistently think about, you will eventually become. You will attract it into your life or be drawn toward those behaviors. And Proverbs 4:23 NKJV adds this: keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life. Your thought life is not a private matter. It is a prophetic one.
Faith Anchor #1: Your thought life is not private. It is prophetic. What you consistently think about, you will eventually become.
How to do it. Ephesians 4:22-24 NKJV gives us the instruction. Put off the old man, which grows corrupt according to deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man, which was created according to God in true righteousness and holiness. The renewal happens in the spirit of your mind. And the way you renew it is through the washing of the Word. Reading it. Hearing it. Speaking it. When you immerse yourself in God's Word consistently, you are washing your mind clean of the corruption that the world has deposited there.
Philippians 4:8 NKJV takes it further. Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things. Eight specific categories. And true biblical meditation is not sitting in silence. It is reading, speaking, and hearing the Word in a loop so that it sows seed in your heart, grows, and produces fruit in your life. You cannot just think your way into renewal. You have to speak it.
Faith Anchor #2: What you feed your mind determines what your mind feeds you. Renewing your mind is not a one time event. It is a daily decision.
What is at stake. Second Corinthians 10:4-5 NKJV says, for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.
Every thought. Not some thoughts. Every single one. The good ones and the bad ones. You have been given the authority as a believer to take your thoughts captive. Not to tolerate them. Not to manage them. To take them captive and bring them into alignment with the obedience of Christ.
Faith Anchor #3: Your mind is the battlefield. Every thought you do not take captive can eventually take you captive.
That is not a threat. That is a warning and a call to action. You have the authority. You have the Word. You have the weapons. Now use them. Guard the battlefield. Renew your mind daily. And take back what the enemy has been occupying in your thought life.
Part Two: Take Control of Your Life Through Personal Agency
Now let me bring you the second word for today. And this one is going to challenge the way you think about your choices, your habits, and your potential.
Personal agency is one of the most powerful concepts in personal development, and it sits at the very epicenter of it. Agency is your ability to make deliberate and effective choices, to take actions that influence your thoughts, your behavior, and your future. In short, it is the sense of ownership you have over your own life.
And here is where I want to start. There are two fundamentally different ways people navigate life. Victim mindset and ownership mindset.
A person with a victim mindset believes that things happen against them and in spite of them. That the world is working against their favor. That their choices do not matter. And that someone or something else is responsible for the quality of their life.
A person with an ownership mindset understands that things may not always go the way they want. But they believe the power to respond, to redirect, and to rebuild is in their hands. They do not wait to be rescued. They take ownership of what they can control and start moving.
Leadership Truth Bomb #1: You may not control the outcome. But you always control the input.
The more you control the input, the more predictable your outcomes become. Stop living by chance and start living by design. Because the quality of your life is largely the sum of your daily choices, whether those choices are made intentionally or by default.
The second pillar I want to take you to is intentionality. Intentionality is setting deliberate goals and then aligning your actions toward those goals. Vague goals produce vague results. Specific goals with specific actions create momentum.
Leadership Truth Bomb #2: What you do on purpose creates what others call potential.
The people who look at you and see success have not seen all the late nights, the early mornings, or the hours of grinding in private. What they are recognizing is the compounded result of choices you made when no one was watching.
Self efficacy, the third pillar, is the belief in your ability to execute. It is built one kept promise at a time. When you make a commitment to yourself and you follow through, your belief in your own capacity grows.
Leadership Truth Bomb #3: Confidence is not found. It is built through follow through.
The fourth pillar is forethought. This is where you learn to anticipate consequences by making strategic choices today that your future self will thank you for. Wisdom is not just knowing what to do. It is thinking past the moment. Every input you choose today is shaping a future outcome. That awareness changes how you make decisions.
The fifth pillar is implementation. Because knowledge without action is just potential with nowhere to go. Start right where you are. You do not need more information. You need execution. Measure what you are doing. Make adjustments. And keep moving. Because clarity does not come before action. It comes through it.
Leadership Truth Bomb #4: Action is the antidote for overthinking. Start right where you are.
And the sixth and final pillar is self reflection. Look back in order to grow forward. Not to live in the past but to learn from it. Because success without reflection creates ego, not excellence. The leaders who grow fastest are the ones who regularly examine what worked, what did not, and what they would do differently. If you never reflect, you will keep repeating the same results.
You have greatness on the inside of you. And personal agency is how you get it on the outside where others can see it and where the world can benefit from it. Take ownership. Move intentionally. Build the follow through. Think past the moment. Execute. Reflect. And do it again.
Take This With You
This week I want you to do two things, one for each word we covered today.
On the faith side, write down one thought pattern that has been running without your permission. Fear. Worry. Doubt. A negative narrative about yourself or your future. Name it. Then find a scripture that speaks directly to it. Speak that scripture over yourself every single day this week. Take that thought captive. Replace it with the Word. That is how you start redeeming your mind.
On the leadership side, ask yourself honestly: am I living by design or by default? Pick one area of your life where you have been running on default and make one deliberate, specific decision this week to redirect it. Write it down with a time frame. Then honor your word to yourself and follow through. That is where personal agency begins.
